Library Policies

Library Materials Circulated

The following categories of materials may be borrowed:

  • Books in the circulating collection
  • Media items including CDs, DVDs, and VHS

The following materials have limited circulation and must be obtained from the ASK Desk:

  • Theses
  • Honors papers
  • Reserve items
  • Equipment reserves (Headphones, External DVD/CD drives, Whiteboard markers, Adapters)

The following materials are not circulated and must be used on the library premises:

  • Periodicals (Exception: certain Juvenile titles)
  • Rare books
  • Reference books
  • Microforms

Loan Periods

 Books from Stacks

  • Undergraduate Student – 4 Weeks
  • Graduate Student – 6 Weeks
  • Faculty & Staff –  1 Year

Media Items

  • Undergraduate Student  1 Week
  • Graduate Student – 1 Week
  • Faculty & Staff – 1 Week

Theses & Honors papers (May not leave library)

  • Undergraduate Student 2 hours
  • Graduate Student – 2 hours
  • Faculty & Staff – 2 hours

Course Reserves

  • Undergraduate Student As designated
  • Graduate Student – As designated
  • Faculty & Staff – As designated

 

Equipment Reserve

  • Undergraduate Student End of day
  • Graduate Student – End of day
  • Faculty & Staff – End of day

Number of items that can be borrowed at one time

There is no limit to the amount of books and media that may be checked out.  Reserves are limited to 2 at a time.

ID cards required for borrowing books

One of the following identification cards is required for borrowing books from the library:

  • Campus ID Card
  • Drivers License or other photo ID

Renewals

Books may be renewed up to five times unless a hold has been placed on them. Renewals may be made in person, by phone, or online.

Holds

Anyone may place a hold on a book that is checked out. When the item is returned, the person who has placed the hold will be notified by email, and library staff shall hold the item at the desk for up to one week. If the held item is not picked up within one week, it will be returned to the circulation stacks. Reserve materials may not be placed on hold.

Overdue, lost, damaged

  • Items overdue for four weeks are declared lost. Fines and fees may apply.
  • Damaged items will be assessed by the circulation supervisor to determine the need for replacement or repair.
  • Lost items are billed at a flat rate of $50. If the book is returned before reordering, the fee may be refunded.
  • Library courtesy notices are distributed via email.
  • Course Reserve items are fined as designated on the lable.

Item searches

Searches will be initiated for items that cannot be located. Patrons will be notified if the item is found.

Reference services

Reference services are available to library users during regular business hours. Reference services do not include personal, medical or legal advice.

Library property

All materials must be properly checked out at the ASK Desk before exiting the Library. Campus Police will be contacted if a user is suspected of theft, defacement, vandalism, or other criminal activities.

Emergency alarms

Users may not exit the building through emergency doors except in the case of an actual emergency. Building fire alarms require evacuation.

Use of library equipment

Library computers are available for research and personal use. Print release stations are located on each floor.  Circulating equipment and supplies are available at the ASK Desk.

Gifts & donations

The Library accepts donated materials and exercises sole discretion in their disposition. Donors may request a written acknowledgment of donations; however, federal law prohibits value estimations for tax purposes. Appraisals or estimates are the sole responsibility of the donor, and it is recommended that donors seek professional tax or estate counsel prior to making a valuable gift to the Library..

Use and scheduling of library rooms

Designated Library study rooms are available for reservation through the library booking system.  The Blue Law Room and Library Conference Room (214) are available to be scheduled by faculty and staff only.  Any room may be used by students if not scheduled and are available on first-come, first-served basis. 

Frederick D. Hill Archives

Access to archival materials are available in the Yvonne Shaheen Reading Room. Collection access may be restricted based on privacy laws and donor agreement.
